SELF-REPORTED INDICATORS
Schools may choose to describe up to two additional pieces of information about how their school is supporting students. These self-reported indicators are not factored into school accountability calculations but provide the opportunity for schools to highlight successful programs or practices in addition to the indicators included in school accountability.
EQUITABLE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Going back to our roots!
This past year, Shadow Valley Elementary was able to revive our Magnet focus as an environmental science school–and the need for authentic STEM learning in our educational system. With fewer COVID restrictions, we were able to welcome back and include our parents and community members. We are grateful to all of our families and contributors who helped us to expand and renew our garden area. Through the diligent efforts of our parent coordinator, we learned about new landscaping tips, water conservation, recycling, and what to plant! This next year, students will have the opportunity to adopt a garden box and learn even more about seed standards while getting their hands dirty!
EQUITABLE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Raise and Release
One of the many environmental STEM projects that we were able to take on this past year was the Utah Trout in the Classroom Program. In collaboration with the Utah Division of wildlife, our school was one of 49 in the state selected to participate in the program. Taking new initiatives, our students were able to lead, monitor, and take good care of our new pets! While the tasks were tricky (monitoring the water quality, feeding, and observing the growth…) our students succeeded and were able to release our grown trout in a nearby approved pond. What a fun and intensive experience to apply our skills in reading, writing, math, and science.
